In order for your home to be pleasant for having a good time, its lighting is very important. To do this, we suggest following these 10 tips for success.
In these 10 tips for lighting your home, we are going to give you tips and tricks so that you know how to place the lamps in your home, so that the light is adequate and also decorates the room. Moreover, to obtain a unique decor, you have to combine it with nice and clever products that you can discover on zevessa: a site that offers products everyday, stylish, fun and innovative.
The tips we are going to give you concern the type of light; the amount of light and the distribution of light, because every room in your house requires a certain amount of light.
To start, let's talk about natural light first.
1. Natural light
Yes, it is true that we have unique and well-priced lamps, but your home should receive as much natural light as possible. Natural light is important because the human body gets used to being more relaxed or active depending on the light it perceives.
So trying to make the light as natural as possible is a priority.
Using light colored walls is usually very helpful for light to illuminate the room. At least the area that will receive the most light could have decoration in light tones so that the light is reflected throughout the room, increasing natural light. It can be furniture, sofas or walls in white or beige tones.
Our goal being to allow you to experience interesting new things every day at a good price, you can benefit from our advice to perfect this aspect.
The windows in your home are large enough to let light into every room. But so that the excess light does not bother, put thin, light-colored curtains on the windows that receive more light during the day. You can place another curtain a little thicker for the moments of relaxation when you want less light.
2. Main ceiling light
Every room in your house should have at least one ceiling light. Including the hallway and the aisles, two areas that we almost always overlook.
Why do I need a main light in every room?
Very simple, because you need to have a switch that fills the room with light for those times of day when natural light doesn't work or rooms where natural light doesn't reach.
A ceiling light or a ceiling strip are perfect options to install in the center of the room. Depending on the shape and size of the room, you can know the type of lamp you need. For example, placing a suspension in a bathroom is a bad option, compared to a ceiling where it will be much more compact and functional.
Below we'll discuss a little the different lamp options depending on the room:
Types of ceiling lights
Our Ceiling Lamps have decorative, elegant and infinite shapes and colors. They combine with any room and are perfect for giving a different decorative touch to the room.
Ceiling strips work great in living rooms and dining rooms because they allow you to direct light where you need it, allowing for better light distribution. A normal pendant is synonymous with a ceiling light, but in this case we mean lamps with a long length of cable that seem to float in the room.
Another variant of ceiling lights are the chandeliers of a certain classic retro style and even very decorative. Like the suspensions, their function is to illuminate and even decorate even when they are off.
3. Auxiliary lamps
In addition to the ceiling light, you will need additional lighting depending on the square meters of each room.
The trick to good lighting in any room would be to place lamps "just in case". It's a light that, once turned off, doesn't use electricity and since you're only going to turn it on once in a while, it won't be too much of an expense.
Another point that goes in favor of such an installation is that there are streetlights; table lamps and sconces that decorate when switched off. This is one more reason to think about buying lamps for additional lighting.
Remember that although you usually use a ceiling light to light up the living room, there are times when you are having dinner or reading the paper and you need some extra light. For these times, auxiliary lights or the installation of dimmable LED lights would be the solution. Some of our LED lamps can be dimmed in light intensity and even color, making them very versatile and essential for everyday use.
4. Amount of light needed for each room
Each room in your home requires a different level of light. This light mainly depends on your taste, if you read correctly, the light of each room is something subjective, it is not a fixed value. Each room has more square or rectangular dimensions and it is then everyone's taste to have a more or less powerful light that comes into play.
This is the main reason why you need our advice. In general, the illuminance of a room can be measured in "lux". A lux is a measurement that relates lumens to square meters. Lumens are the intensity or power of light, a value that LED bulbs and LED lamps incorporate.
From this point of view, we invite you to visit our site to discover useful and intelligent products that you could never have thought of.
How many lamps are needed per room
The rule of three you need to know if a lamp will be bright enough is:
Lux (Lx) = Lumens / Square Meters
For example, for a room of 20 square meters which requires 100 lux to be well lit, you then do:
100 Lux = Lumens / 20 m 2. The result will allow you to decide what to do.
However, what you absolutely need to know is the lumens of the lamp to be placed.
Lumens = 100 lux X 20 m 2 = 2000 lumens.
If the lamp/bulb provides 2000 lumens and distributes the light evenly, we can say that it is a suitable light for a room of 20 m 2 . Of course, this amount of lumens can be distributed among several light points, not only obtained with the main light.
Additionally, this measurement of the amount of light needed for each room takes into account an open space without furniture. In general, between sofas, cabinets and other decorative elements, our pieces are a little smaller, take this into account when making your estimates.
Lumens each room needs
Depending on the room, more or less lumens are needed. In this table you will see some approximate luxury values that lighting experts consider adequate light:
- Salons: 100 – 300 Luxe.
- Dining rooms: 200 - 300 Luxuries
- Children's bedrooms: 150 - 200 Lux.
- Bathrooms: 150 Luxury
- Corridors: 100 - 200 Lux.
- Entrance areas, hall: 150 Lux.
- Study areas, offices: 400 - 500 Lux.
The high power of Luxes is for a specific area such as the light to be seen properly in the mirror or the light on the study table, it is not the light the whole room has need. Usually it will be a space of 1 m 2 or less.
The values above are all approximate values that a room would need to have enough light. There are people who prefer lighting more or less, so they can take these values as guidelines.
As you have seen most coins have two values, in principle the ideal would be that you have several points of light and that each provides light between the lowest value and the highest value high. In this way you will have the necessary light at all times, for example in the children's room, low ambient light is necessary to be in the room, but to play, color or do homework, it is better to have more of light in the room.
5. Illuminate your home with warm light
The color temperature mimics the light offered by the sun at different times of the day. From sunrise to sunset in reddish colors, passing through the most neutral tones during the central hours of the day.
As we often see, the sun changes the color temperature we perceive throughout the day, from sunrise to sunset. And as you progress, the colors are perceived differently.
Color temperature of the sun throughout the day
The light from your lamps can be divided into three shades or colors. Each "color" affects our mood, feeling tired, concentration. In general, it directly affects our vital functions.
It is therefore very important to know how to choose the light according to the room. We distinguish a warm and welcoming light, a neutral light similar to that of the sun, a cold light for moments of concentration.
Why is it necessary to use a warm light to illuminate my house instead of a cold light?
Cold light is used in places such as offices, bank branches, waiting rooms, clothing stores or medical consultations, among others. These places have one thing in common, the light needed to see objects must be clear and cold so that people working do not feel tired.
Cold light mimics sunlight in the middle of the day and creates an effect on people that keeps them focused and focused. None of this is what you want when you get home.
When you get home, all you want to do is forget about work and disconnect. You can achieve this only with a relaxed atmosphere designed for rest, for this you need warm light.
Between warm light and neutral light, which type of light is best for my home?
The first thing is to keep in mind that in your house you usually spend more time in the morning and towards the afternoon/evening. At this time the sunlight is warm, so in your home you will need to blend these tones with ambient lighting in a warm color.
In the living room and in the bedroom, the light should be mainly warm or neutral, never cold. We often want the stay to be cozy and invite you to relax and rest.
The kitchen and the bathroom can have neutral and even cold light. These are rooms where you want good light to be concentrated. Of course, keep in mind that cool light almost always works best in white rooms.
In the hall or passage areas, the light can be neutral or warm, depending on taste or the layout of the rooms in relation to each other. In case of separation, you have no problem.
In study or office spaces the main light should be neutral although this is an area where some type of work is being done. For example, writing papers, working with a computer or reading are tasks that are best done in cool, neutral light.
When distributing open spaces in your home, remember that the important thing is that the lighting in one room does not conflict or be very different from another. Just in case at some point you have both lights on at the same time, which is not recommended because the light is not pleasant if it has two very different color temperatures and you are in the middle.
Tips for always having the right color temperature when lighting your home
The best trick to always get the right light temperature is to use lamps with an integrated LED, especially those that have the ability to change the color temperature. Originally, LED light gave a cold light, but now there are LEDs with different color temperatures. There are now models that have a regulator to change the color temperature of the light.
6. Illuminate shadow areas
It seems obvious, but we almost always forget that the nooks and crannies of our home are often poorly lit and make the decoration less than perfect.
Remove areas with unnecessary shadow costs, this can be easily achieved with auxiliary lighting. In general, corners such as the living room or bedroom may have areas with less light, which is normally not a problem, but at certain specific times it can bother us.
It no longer just causes discomfort if you have to change places because you don't have a light, but because the decoration in that part of the room will go unnoticed, as if it weren't there not. Whether you have a closet, pictures, paintings or a library; you will have to combine different types of accent lighting and floor lamps.
Remember the tips we gave you in point three about accent lights!
7. Install specific light points for reading or studying
What we always forget when planning lighting are those little moments in everyday life, which maybe only happen on weekends or once every two weeks, these are the times of reading, homework and study.
These moments are usually achieved with warm or neutral mood lighting in the room, whether in the living room, study or bedroom. As we have already mentioned, warm light is relaxing, it tends to cause fatigue and in the end even drowsiness.
Have you ever noticed that you fall asleep while studying? It may be because of your lighting! Or because you don't like to study too much, but back to the lamps.
A neutral or cold light improves concentration. Such light can be given by a flexo or a side table lamp. With cold light, a more powerful light is obtained so as not to strain the eyes.
Take a look at our flexos. Most allow you to regulate the light in intensity and color temperature for moments of greater or lesser concentration.
8. Place the lamp you need, not the one that decorates the whole room
Lamps are a complement to the decoration, they are not "The decoration", that is, you can love a decoration with a two-meter-long floor lamp or fell in love with a ceiling light that you have seen in a hotel room. But if you want to place them in your home, you must first think about the square meters you have and then the use you are going to give to the large lamps.
Remember that one lamp in the room does not provide enough light at all times of the day. Before deciding to place an XL lamp, consider placing two or more lamps that illuminate with the necessary light and decorate.
9. Install lamps in a style that matches the décor
Lamps tend to have characteristics that make them unique, but at the same time the materials and shapes in which they are made belong to one of the decorative styles. The different styles we categorize our lamps into are as follows:
- Modern style lamps;
- Classic style lamps;
- Retro-vintage design lamps;
- Rustic lamps;
- Industrial influence lamps;
- Designer lamps.
Each style of lamp blends seamlessly into decorated rooms following the guidelines of each decorative style. First think about the style of the room depending on whether certain colors or others predominate, then think about the materials that are more protagonists such as wood, metal, glass and finally take into account your own style when decorating.
Remember that the lamp completes the decor. A classic room with little decoration can become a modern room with two or three lamps decorating it.
You can consult our models of modern lamps for the living room to inspire you with some models and different possibilities with which you can decorate your living room or dining room.
10. Combine lamps from the same collection or family
The interior design trump card: If a room has a ceiling light with a white shade and you place a white floor lamp, even if they aren't even similar in shape or design, it will create a decorative harmony. This harmony is what gives the impression that a room is well or badly decorated, it's like a little trick if you are not very clear on the lamps you want to place.
Choose lamps that combine by color or material with the other lamps in the room. This way you will have adequate lighting, as well as magazine decoration. Always remember that there are lamps from the same family or from the same collection. In other words, there is a collection of ceiling lamps, wall lamps, floor lamps, table lamps and others that have the same characteristics, colors and materials. They usually have the same name and come from the same manufacturer.
